If you were hoping to snag the first 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray convertible, you are now out of luck. The first example of the new droptop just sold this weekend at Barrett-Jackson's Palm Beach auction for a cool $1 million.
We reported last month that the first example of the new C7 Corvette convertible would be going on the block, with the proceeds of the sale going to charity. While the car that was auctioned off was just a placeholder – Chevrolet will let the winning bidder select their own interior and exterior colors – we do know that it was equipped with the new seven-speed manual transmission. Of course, that transmission is hooked to the new 6.2-liter LT1 V-8 engine that's good for about 450 hp.
The winning bid for the first 2014 Corvette convertible came out to a nice, round $1 million – all of which will go to benefit the the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer institute at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. That said, the sale of the first Corvette convertible fell a little short of the first coupe's auction sale: that car had a $1.05 million winning bid, which helped to fund Detroit's College for Creative Studies.
