Prius production was put on pause for a few hours yesterday after a fire began in the Tsutsumi, Japan plant.
Thanks to the fact that the fire started in the molding and stamping area and not on the assembly line, production is only behind by a couple dozen vehicles, says Ryo Sakai, senior executive coordinator at Toyota North America.

There's no damage to the equipment, Sakai continues, explaining that most damage is on the ceiling. The fire began this morning at 10 a.m. and production resumed in time for the evening shift, around 3 p.m. Toyota has not yet determined the cause of the fire.
Toyota has shown an interest in producing the Prius in the U.S. eventually, though that might still be a number of years away. For 2010, Prius sales in the U.S. were flat, with 140,928 units sold.
