Thirty years ago, rally champion Walter Rohrl and co-driver Christian Geistdoerfer almost won the 1981 San Remo rally in a Porsche 911 SC, but a snapped driveshaft cost them victory. Now the two have been reunited with their car and will enter it in the Targa Tasmania, a 1200-plus-mile campaign across Australia. In this video, Rohrl and Geistdoerfer talk about the race in 1981 and their desire to beat the all-wheel-drive Audis that were becoming successful in rallying (and, ironically, which Rohrl went on to drive in 1984). The video also affords us a chance to ogle the rally car, which looks stunning in its 1980s rally garb. For Rohrl, the Targa Tasmania is not simply a chance to drive an old car again -- he is determined to win the race’s classic class. Over 300 cars are registered for this year’s Targa Tasmania, and of them 34 are Porsche models of assorted vintage. Source: YouTube Click here for video
