The number of times rivals such as the Porsche 911 and Chevrolet Corvette, the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro have been compared can probably be counted in the hundreds of times. For the cars' respective fans, the matchups never get old. But every now and then, it's fun to take two vehicles that are seemingly polar opposites, and pit them against each other. That's exactly what the team at British auto magazine Autocar did in this matchup between a Caterham Seven Super Sport, and a Land Rover Bowler EXR S, a highly customized off-road machine loosely based on Rover mechanicals costing the equivalent of $235,000.
Autocar editors Steve Sutcliffe and Matt Prior flog both machines around Britain's Millbrook handling circuit to see if the massively powerful Bowler can keep up with the much less powerful (but also much lighter-weight) Caterham. Sutcliffe called the Bowler "one of the maddest cars in the universe" and a "serious rich man's toy" on virtue of its steep price tag.
Prior, driving the Caterham, called the Bowler "apocalyptically fast" having a hard time shaking the super-powerful SUV from his rearview mirrors. Only in the tighter corners could he achieve a significant gap between the vehicles, with the Bowler easily making up the difference in the straights.
At the end of the day, the Bowler did a 43.1-second solo lap, while the Caterham managed a lap time of 42 seconds flat. But the 1.1 second difference did not dissuade Sutcliffe from wanting the Bowler, saying if he were rich enough, it would definitely be in his collection.
The video is definitely not HD quality, but that doesn't diminish the entertainment value or the wackiness of this unlikely comparison. Watch the video for yourself below.
