Subaru is commemorating the end of the third-generation WRX with a new Special Edition model. While the 2013 Subaru WRX Special Edition upgrades the sedan with retina-searing orange paint and interior trim, Motor Trend’s Carlos Lago drives the 2013 Subaru WRX Special Edition in the mountains to see if the Special Edition model retains the car’s balance of performance and ruggedness.
Under the hood, the turbocharged 265-hp 2.5-liter flat-four engine remains, as does the five-speed manual transmission and all-wheel-drive system. At the track, the car hits 60 mph in 4.7 seconds and finishes the quarter-mile in about 13.5 seconds. Though, as Lago warns, the results are attained via a clutch-destroying redline clutch slip. Around Motor Trend’s figure-eight handling track, the outgoing WRX is just two-tenths of a second slower than the all-new Ford Focus ST.
Like most Subarus, the WRX is intended for those with active lifestyles who need a rugged, utilitarian vehicle to get them to their destination – something we can’t exactly say about the smaller, rear-drive BRZ. With the turbocharged boxer engine, the WRX is supposed to add driving enjoyment to its practicality. So what does Lago think of the 2013 Subaru WRX Sedan Special Edition?
