In the latest episode of Ignition, Carlos Lago drives a car that tries to be both sporting and luxurious at the same time. He puts the 2014 Audi S4 to the test on the track and on winding public roads, to see whether it strikes the right balance between fun and luxury.
First, Lago heads to the test track, where he is impressed that the 2014 Audi S4 can hit 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds. That's thanks to a 333-hp supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine, a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and quattro all-wheel drive. Lago is less impressed with the Audi's tendency to under steer on the figure-eight skid pad.
Out on the open road, the 2014 Audi S4 continues to offer mixed messages. While it is quick and responsive, and has a throaty exhaust note, the controls and driver feedback are somewhat subdued compared to some rival sports sedans. The S4 may prioritize luxury over driving enjoyment, which isn't quite what Lago wanted from such a car.
"This car isn't amazing at ten-tenths, but it shouldn't be; it's a luxury car," he says. "It's hard to be enthusiastic about a luxury sedan that's nice to drive."
