Feature Flick: Porsche Unveils Production-Spec 918 Spyder at Private NYC Party

Porsche first unveiled its 918 Spyder concept at a very big, public event--the Geneva Motor Show in 2010--but when it came time to show off the production-ready model, the German automaker decided on a private party. Thankfully, we've found video of the event.

There aren't too many surprises in the three-minute video: it begins with a few shots of the 2011 Porsche 918 RSR concept (something with which we're pretty familiar), but guests at Canoe Studios in New York City got a bonus look at the 918 when Porsche pulled the wraps off what appears to be the production-ready, road-going 918 Spyder.

The differences between the 918 RSR and 918 Spyder are slight: the exhaust pipes on the production model appear to be behind the headrests (channeling air away from the cabin, of course), as opposed to the side-exit exhausts from the concept. That matches the last few 918s we've seen, including those in Porsche Salzburg and Martini liveries (including black-and-white and full-color versions). The production version, however, doesn't have the gigantic fixed rear wing from the black-and-white Martini 918 we saw in July and the black-and-white Porsche Salzburg livery we saw in May. If Porsche is still serious about the fixed wing, it might confirm the existence of a hardcore Race Track package, which rumors allege maygut the interior and delete exterior paint in order to save weight.

In any event, the 770-horse Porsche goes into production in September 2013, and will reach owners by the end of the year.
