Porsche is attempting to raise the supercar bar for performance and fuel economy with the all-new 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid. Motivation comes from a naturally aspirated 4.6-liter V-8 and two electric motors. On this Feature Flick, Porsche engineers talk about the new 918 Spyder while testing at the Nürburgring.
One engineer insists that if a car can perform well at the Nürburgring, it will perform well on any track or any road in the world. Porsche claims its new supercar can hit 60 mph in less than 3 seconds and has a top speed above 200 mph.
The 918 Spyder is also a test bed for next-generation Porsche technologies including powertrain bits as well as the steering wheel and seats. Later versions of these technologies are likely to make their way into more mainstream models like future 911s and Caymans.
