Feature Flick: Pike's Peak-Bound 400 HP Electric 1995 BMW M3 Burns Electrons and Rubber

The electric vehicle division of this summer's Pike's Peak International Hillclimb is turning out to be one of the most watched and anticipated, with entries such as a full-race spec Mitsubishi i-MiEV and a Nissan Leaf. But those aren't the only two entries in the division. Electric vehicle conversion specialist EV West is building this 1995 BMW M3 in preparation for the competition, and released this teaser video on YouTube with NASCAR celebrity driver Boris Said behind the wheel.

As shown in this clip, the m3 is currently producing approximately 400 hp, but EV West, the company that is building the car, promises that it will be closer to 700 hp by the time the race comes around. The video shows some underhood shots of the car, and what appear to be twin air intakes. But since this M3 is a full electric vehicle, the intakes are for the electric motor's cooling system. Yes, Virginia, even though there's no actual combustion taking place underhood, electric motors still produce heat, and just as in ICE-powered cars, heat is the enemy of performance.

Watch the video below of the electrified M3, and stay tuned for the car's debut in full race livery at this year's Pike's Peak International Hillclimb!
