And now for something completely different: in the latest episode of Dirt Every Day, two off-road camper vans are compared to see which finds the best compromise between off road capability and hospitality.
There is a catch, though. While one of the competitors is a specially-outfitted, four-wheel-drive Ford E-Series van by Sportsmobile, the other—a Pace Arrow Motorhome—is not quite as optimized for the off-road environment.
The Sportsmobile Ford van has everything including the kitchen sink, with water tanks that provide freshwater to the kitchen replete with a microwave, stove, and refrigerator just like a motorhome. The only difference is, this van is lifted, strengthened, and modified with a four-wheel-drive system and off-road tires to give it go-anywhere capability. The Sportsmobile Ford takes on the obstacles with ease and impresses with its ground clearance and traction.
The 1986 Pace Arrow Motorhome is luxurious on the inside as well, although it looks like it has seen better days. There are plenty of amenities like beds, a kitchen, and a bathroom inside, and even a V-8 engine under the hood. Once underway off-road, though, it’s clear that the Pace Arrow cannot match the Sportsmobile Ford Van’s sturdy construction. We have to admit that it’s pretty entertaining to see the behemoth take on the desert environment, though.
