The Australian wing of Nissan Motorsports released a brief video teasing the new Altima race car it's preparing for the V8 Supercar series. The company plans to reveal its first Altima V8 Supercar next week on Tuesday, October 30.
Though the video doesn't show much of the car, a brief look under a sheet reveals a body shell that appears to be based on the Altima sedan. Of course, there will be few similarities between a production Nissan Altima and the race car -- the V8 Supercar will get rear-wheel-drive and a big V-8 engine. The mill is a high-performance version of the Nissan VK56DE, a 5.6-liter V-8 that is used in the Nissan Armada SUV and Titan pickup truck. While the engine is rated for just 317 hp in those applications, this racing version is believed to produce about 600 hp.
We'll have to wait until next week for more details on Nissan's Altima-styled race car. The automaker is optimistic, however, that the new racer will be competitive in the V8 Supercar series. Until now the series has been dominated by entries from Ford and Holden, but Nissan believes it will succeed by entering four cars in the 2013 season.
