Feature Flick: Mitsubishi Says Farewell To The Eclipse

It's been years since the Mitsubishi Eclipse won the hearts and minds of enthusiasts. No longer turbocharged or sporting all-wheel drive, the Eclipse was pretty much written off by most looking for a truly hot ride. Mitsubishi wrapped up production of its last remaining sports coupe earlier this summer, and documented , the final example rolling off the assembly line in Normal, Illinois.

Mitsubishi’s tribute starts with it going through the Eclipse’s four generations, allowing us to see where exactly the Eclipse went wrong. The first generation Eclipse was produced from 1990 to 1994, and was notable for being available with all-wheel drive and a turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 producing 195-hp. The second generation Eclipse, built from 1995 to 1999, picked up where the first gen left off. Popular with tuners, the second-gen Eclipse’s turbo 2.0-liter I-4 produced 210-hp and continued to be available with all-wheel drive.

The 2000-2005 Eclipse lost its turbo, and the ability to send power to all four wheels. The front-drive only third gen produced 205-hp out of a (heavier) 3.0-liter V-6 instead of a lighter, turbocharged four-cylinder.  The fourth-generation model, which debuted in 2005, attempted to improve things with a 263-hp, 3.8-liter V-6, but it seems the sport coupe buyer had since moved on.

The final Eclipse was auctioned off for $35,000, which probably wasn’t far off the car’s actual MSRP. Nevertheless, we’ll remember the Eclipse not for what it ultimately became, but for what it once was. You can check out Mitsubishi’s send off below. Tell us -- will you miss the Eclipse?

As an owner of both a first generation and a fourth generation Eclipse I can say that the latter was far too heavy even for the V6 that I had. It was far too embarrassing when the Civic next to me far outpaced me from the red light. I liked the looks of the shape and burnt orange paint, but when an engine ultimately growls in first gear to only be outpaced by a car that cost almost $15,000 less, there is something wrong. Now in fairness I'm not a fan of the electric vehicle hubbub going on right now, so I'd like to see Mitsubishi return to the days of making cars people actually found fun to drive.
As a present Mitsubishi owner I hate the direction their taking, all this hybrid bullshit (their trying to be like Honda. FAIL) the 1st and 2nd gen eclipse were great cars but Mitsubishi has lost their way like most Japanese car makers! As it looks I will NOT BUY ANOTHER MITSUBISHI! Mitsubishi awd, light weight, turbo, 24k car loaded????????? ( 2 Dr coupe would be nice)
Hey Mitsubishi, can you sell the US your iCar or whatever it's called with a gas motor and stickhshift, call it revenge of the Super Beetle, offer it in white with an optional stripe and "53" on it? You could do that for under $15k easily, I bet. That could be fun. That could appeal to ME.
when the car became a Japanese Monte Carlo, big doors and all, glug glug glug, down it went. cheap, small, light, agile, that stuff works, mkay?
Not a car I'll miss, its styling wasn't groundbreaking. I did drive an 03 model at a media event in Quebec and came away impressed with the car's performance and handling. I agree with kego53, Mitsubishi needs to get it together or they're gone. I hope they're studying Hyundai.
I had a 1st & 2nd generation - loved both cars - they were so much fun to drive. Didn't like the 3rd generation at all. If they had skipped it and gone straight to the 4th with turbo 4 & AWD it would still be doing good.
In a word......NO. However, I hate to see a once proud car maker falling into ruin and dishonor. This to me seems to be the fate of Mitsubishi. During the late 80s and early 90s it seemed that Mitsu was on a roll with the Galant and the Eclipse. Their pickups were even very desireable. Then things began to change in the automotive industry (not necessarily for the good either) and they continually lost ground to competition and have never come back. I hope they can turn things around before the whole company is gone from these shores.
