Feature Flick: Mini Coupe Takes on the 24 Hours of Nurburgring

For the past few weeks, Mini has been showing off it's new Coupe model via the usual barrage of press releases and photos. Well, the Coupe's vacation ended last week as Mini tested its new model for 24 hours around the "Green Hell."

In the video below, Mini Motorsports documents two John Cooper Works Coupe Endurance cars that tackled the 39th annual 24 Hours of Nürburgring last weekend (it was also Mini’s first time entering the competition). And while both JCW Coupes didn’t finish high in the rankings, Mini is still calling its day at the Green Hell a success since both cars were able to cross the finish line. The team even recovered from a major setback when driver Harald Hennes in car #147 skidded on a patch of oil, lost control and crashed into a barrier just five laps into the race. The crew was able to repair the coupe, which finished tenth in the SP3T class and 118th overall. Car #146 finished eighth in the SP3T category and 106th overall.
"We were prepared for a dramatic race right from the start," said Dirk Hollweg, Head of MINI Motorsport. "And that is just what happened.”

The Endurance races cars are based off the new 2012 John Cooper Works Coupe and were fitted with a number of racing bits to help conquer the Green Hell. The 1.6-liter turbocharged-four cylinder was tweaked to put out 250-hp and 243 lb-ft of torque (42-hp and 51 lb-ft more than the stock engine), while top speed was been increased to 149 mph. Stiffer shocks, a JCW aerodynamics package, a rollcage, six-point seat harness and a pneumatic, built-in jacking system round off the package.

"It was the first 24 hours race for me, and I had never driven the Nürburgring Nordschleife at night before, said Hendrik Vieth, driver of car #146. “That both cars reached the finish line was super. I cannot imagine a much better result."
