Feature Flick: Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6x6 on Head 2 Head

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG is a good off-roader. It’s got a big 5.5-liter 536-hp twin-turbo V-8 engine that makes a whopping 561 lb-ft of torque. It also boasts intelligent all-wheel drive and three sequentially locking differentials. As far as luxury off-road SUVs go, Gelandewagen remains one of the best names in the business.

However, the addition of the “6 x 6” to the end of the G63 AMG name reminds us that there is a much bigger G-Wagen out there that manages to make the standard four-wheeler look like a toddler learning to ice skate for the first time. Jonny Lieberman took the 2013 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6x6 and G63 AMG to Graz, Austria, in the latest episode of Head 2 Head, for a rugged, off-road comparison. Much crushing, splashing, and differential locking ensued.

Inside the 2013 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6x6 is much like its four-wheeled little brother, despite its extra axle and pair of wheels. The cabin is tight, comfortable, and familiar except for a few major differences. By far the coolest among them is a headliner-mounted control panel controlling the auxiliary fuel tank and compressor for tire pressure control, making the 6x6 even more like veritable military tank. On the center stack are located controls for the 6x6’s five locking differentials. One glaring omission is a back-up camera—Lieberman voices this concern, noting the difficult rearward visibility in an SUV that is over 19 feet long.

As Lieberman demonstrates that the 2013 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6x6 will “go over or crush or kill whatever is in front of it,” we are reminded that it weighs an unbelievable 9050 lbs and can still reach 60 mph in less than eight seconds. Trudging through the proving grounds in Graz and soaring through the air over hills in the countryside, Lieberman explains that although the G63 AMG does everything well, the 6x6 does most of it better.
