Feature Flick: Mercedes-AMG CEO Tobias Moers on Wide Open Throttle

In just his third week as CEO of Mercedes-Benz’s AMG division, Tobias Moers sat down with Motor Trend for the latest episode of Wide Open Throttle. In an interview ranging from subjects like the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series, to the CLA45 AMG, and the veritably absurd G63 AMG 6x6 supertruck, Moers gives a sense of how AMG intends to stay competitive in the future.

After 19 years as head of development  at AMG, Moers seems well-adjusted and ready to continue moving AMG forward. By the brand’s 50th anniversary in 2017, Moers expects to have a lineup of more than 30 cars and a production volume of more than 30,000 vehicles. Compared to what Audi is doing with S and RS models, or what BMW is doing with its M Division, it is clear that AMG has the most comprehensive presence in the luxury motorsport field.

When pressed about the future of AMG, Moers had a few observations he was willing to share. Keeping in mind that AMG is a business after all, and not every vehicle can be as batty at the G63 AMG 6x6 supertruck, Moers feels confident that the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG fits perfectly within the AMG brand and the market it attracts. By contrast, he definitely downplayed the idea of AMG throwing its hat into the hypercar market with the likes of the LaFerrari and McLaren P1.

Moers was, however, willing to indulge some recent speculation that AMG has been developing a Porsche 911 competitor. Responding to previous comments that 2014 would be an exciting year, Moers cleverly acknowledged that “there are good rumors around the world, that’s true. And not everything is wrong.” If AMG can come up with a small sports car to challenge the Porsche 911, we’re ready to leap onto the AMG band-wagen.

Check out the full video below to hear the full interview, which also details his feelings on the 2014 SLS Mercedes-Benz AMG Black Series and how AMG tries to keep itself atop the increasingly stiff competition.
