In the latest episode of Epic Drives, watch as Motor Trend editor-at-large Angus MacKenzie explores hundreds of miles of American roads in an exotic and expensive Italian sports car. The pairing couldn’t be better matched – traversing the state of California in a 2012 Ferrari California.
Southern California may be notorious for its expansive and congested maze of highways, but MacKenzie decides to showcase a few backroads that are perfect for the top-down Ferrari. The 2012 California he’s driving is powered by a 453-hp 4.3-liter V-8 engine with direct injection (the first Ferrari to get the technology). Another Ferrari first is the car’s dual-clutch automatic, which stays busy through the twisty mountain roads. The route starts at California State Route 33 by the city of Ventura, which spills onto the mountain ranges within the Los Padres National Forest. MacKenzie then continues through the central part of the state before reaching the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California, just in time to participate in Motor Trend’s 2012 Best Driver’s Car Competition.
In addition to showing off the Ferrari’s handling abilities (and howling exhaust note), watch as MacKenzie provides a brief history lesson on the original Ferrari California, which debuted in 1957. He also reflects on the spot where actor James Dean lost his life while driving his Porsche 550 Spyder. Watch the latest Epic Drives video below.
