Is it possible to fly without wings? Jay Leno proves it can be done in the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG roadster, as cameras follow him to Germany where the gullwing’s chop-top sibling eagerly awaits the comedian before heading to the track for a spin.
We’ve only gotten to look at, but not yet touch the wingless SLS Roadster, so for the time being, we only have what Leno says to visualize what seat time would be like behind the Benz beauty. But we can’t help but drown out the sound of his voice once we hear (loud and clear) what the 6.2-liter, naturally aspirated V-8 engine sounds like in the roadster sans roof.
But the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox with instant shift is what seems to excite Leno the most, and he’s happy knowing that the quick-shifting car will do all the work for him, which is apparent when he zooms around the bowl at the AMG track, screaming like Tarzan. We can’t blame him for acting the way he does, since he’s being pulled by 571 horses, capable of doing 0-62 mph in 3.8 seconds.
But before he starts playing around the track, Leno gets a hold of a friend who helped develop the car, who explains the high-performance sports car can adapt to various driving conditions: it could cruise lazily in traffic, yet it will unleash performance on-demand.
AMG CEO Ola Källenius also provides another useful tip for driving the wing-clipped roadster: put the gearbox into Sport Plus or manual mode, and just push the throttle. That shouldn’t be a problem, but getting our hands on the roadster, might be.
