It’s not every day you see a full-blown rally car driving down the road, but that’s what happens in this Evo video featuring a Ford Fiesta R5 rally car made by Ford’s longtime rally partner, M-Sport.
The Ford Fiesta R5 is an all new rally car by M-Sport that is based on the Ford Fiesta ST hot hatch. As the first R5 specification car for the new R5 class of the World Rally Championships, the Fiesta R5 was designed almost completely from scratch. The R5 class is an important new development for the WRC because of its price cap. New R5 models from Peugeot, Citroen, and others are expected to join the Fiesta R5 later this year. The Fiesta R5 costs €180,000, or about half the price of a standard WRC car.
Because of its price that falls in the same range as many supercars, Henry Catchpole from Evo decides to slap a license plate on the Fiesta R5 and take it on the road. Predictably, the Ford Fiesta R5 proves to be a brutal companion on the street, with a tricky clutch, sparse interior, and immense amount of power. Still, it’s exhilarating to see and hear the race-ready machine blast down curving roads.
