Some drivers get all the fun. British ex-racing driver Tiff Needell took the 2012 Aston Martin DBS Volante up against the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster on EVO's test track…in the rain.
As a quick reminder, the Aston is powered by a 5.9-liter V-12 engine producing 510 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque, sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential automatic gearbox,; while the Mercedes pumps out 563 hp and 479 lb-ft from its 6.2-liter V-8, sent rearward via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Thanks to the wet conditions, we are treated to much tail-out cornering and screaming from both super-convertibles' respective engines. The Aston turns out to be quite a handful on the soaked track, but Needell points out that the SLS isn't "as driver friendly in these conditions" and "a twitchy beast in these conditions." However, the Merc's extra torque helped to pay off through the turns – there was no need to bounce between second and third gears as in the DBS.
Despite all the sideways action, Needell manages to keep both cars relatively calm to track in fast laps to pick a winner. We won't tell you which high-powered droptop took the gold, so watch the video below to find out.
