The theme Hot Rod's new "Roadkill" series is low-budget road trips, and to kick it off, Mike Finnegan and David Freiburger of Hot Rod magazine are given a total budget of $1500 to buy a car, purchase fuel, drive home, attempt to re-sell the car, and somehow come out ahead in the end.
This time around, the dart lands on El Paso (or thereabouts). After surveying a bunch of jalopies that have definitely seen better days, the two settle on a 1972 Pontiac Catalina they found in a Spanish-language classifieds section. After negotiating the purchase price for $650, the two start tallying up the total for fuel, road food, and other various purchases.
After buying a few necessary repair items to get the car to run reliably, the two are down to just over $750 in their budget, which seems like plenty to get them home, until, as Frieburger so eloquently puts it, "seems like plenty, until you realize this turd is going to drink a lot of gas."
