The 2013 Mazdaspeed3 channels 263 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque to its front wheels, making for an entertaining drive. On this Feature Flick, Carlos Lago asks if the hot hatch, which is rough around the edges, is fun because of or in spite of its powertrain.
At the drag strip, the Mazdaspeed3 accelerates to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, nails the quarter-mile in 14.3 seconds at 100.0 mph, and stops from 60 mph in 117 feet. But Lago is more interested in how the powerful front-driver does in handling tests. With a 0.91 g skidpad average a figure-eight time of 25.9 seconds at 0.71 g average, the Mazdaspeed3 isn’t as lively as Lago would like during cornering, saying, “There is not a lot of finesse; kind of clumsy but kind of fun too.”
Next, Lago heads to canyon roads for real-world impressions. While the engine’s power is strong, the Mazdaspeed3 has lots of torque steer under hard acceleration. Lago adds that the Mazdaspeed3’s torque steer and understeer at the limits only adds to its charm. Check out the video below to see Lago’s conclusion on the 2013 Mazdaspeed3.
