Feature Flick: Dodge Viper ACR-X Sets 7:03.058 Nurburgring Lap Time

The guys over at SRT have had a lot of time on their hands as they wait to roll out the 2013 SRT Viper. Likely looking for something to do, SRT took a 2010 Dodge Viper ACR-X – the track-only version of the Viper ACR – to the Nurburgring’s green hell to do a few hot laps. The results were impressive; the Viper ACR-X set a 7:03.058 lap time, making the super snake the fifth-fastest car ever around the ‘Ring.

Before the Mopar fan boys break out the beer and begin celebrating, it should be noted that the Viper ACR-X is a track-only turnkey racecar that Dodge built at the end of the previous-generation Viper’s production run. The Viper ACR-X is takes the run-of-the-mill Viper ACR, guts the interior, slaps in a roll cage, racing suspension, racing seat and a fuel-cell (among other things), and then bumps the 8.4-liter V-10’s horsepower from 600 to 640, and brings torque up to 605 lb-ft. The extra power comes courtesy of a new, less-restrictive exhaust system, and revised headers.

The Viper ACR-X’s 7:03.058 Nurburgring time puts it in some very fast company. Leading the leaderboard is the carbon titanium Pagani Zonda R with its 6:47:50 lap time, followed by the Radical SR8 LM’s 6:48, the Radical SR8’s 6:55, and then the Ferrari 599XX’s 6:58.16. Though like the Viper ACR-X, none of those cars are street legal, the achievement is nonetheless impressive. The street-legal car closest to the Viper ACR-X’s lap time is the limited-production Gumpert Apollo at 7:11.57, followed closely by the Viper ACR’s 7:12:13. That makes the Viper ACR-X some nine seconds faster than its street-legal sibling.

Though the fact that the Viper ACR-X is not legal for public roads may take away a bit of the luster from its achievement, don’t forget that this is the previous generation Viper laying down these impressive lap times. If the rumors about the 2013 SRT Viper prove to be true, we could be looking at a new street-legal Nurburgring record holder real soon, so stay tuned.

I don't see the point, this is just like Chevy building 4 vettes and 5 Hummers when just one will do with options and the aftermarket, espeically when both brands build primarily rental cars and pickups that could use far more innovation and refinement to keep up with the Japanese and Germans that the Koreans are catching quickly up to. Show me how quickly a Focus ST or V-6 Mustang laps the ring (which for the Stang is quite fast actually) as anything over $50k is only a fraction of the overall market, better yet just run the more modest cars on cone courses on on actual roads with cars people can buy instead of chipping away at unobtainum trophy cars few will ever see let alone possess. Whatever, I'm sure the third bailout will finally be a charm.
