For Nissan, the GT-R is always a work in progress. Year after year, the automaker updates its supercar to allow it to stay relevant and competitive in a world in which the next big supercar seems to drop every couple months. Hot off the announcement of the 2014 Nissan GT-R, Kazutoshi Mizuno, lead engineer on the GT-R, went on video to discuss why his company updates Godzilla nearly every year.
For the 2014 model year, Mizuno said Nissan focused on quality and consistent upgrades for the GT-R, and so it took a herd of Godzillas out to the Nurburgring for testing. "When we go to Nürburgring, we test drive the car over 3000 km [1800 miles]," said Mizuno, "About the same as driving 400,000 km [248,500 miles] on public roads twice a year." Mizuno then discusses some of the non-performance upgrades to the 2014 GT-R, like the "fashionable" amber red interior treatment, which is designed to increase the GT-R's appeal among women and older men.
As we previously reported, other changes to the 2014 Nissan GT-R include new fuel injectors for improved throttle response, a baffled oil pan to prevent starving the engine of oil during high-g cornering, and additional chassis bracing.
