Feature Flick: Chevrolet Teases 2012 Camaro ZL1 Handling, Launch Control

Chevrolet has released two new videos teasing the forthcoming 580-hp, 2012 Camaro ZL1. The videos give us brief, behind-the-scenes previews of the development necessary for the high-performance Camaro.

To refresh your memory, the 2012 Camaro ZL1 is due in spring 2012 with a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 offering 580 hp and 556 lb-ft of torque. Automatic and manual transmissions, with six speeds apiece, will be available. Brembo brakes, an active exhaust system, and the Corvette ZR1’s Performance Traction Management system are all standard.

In the first video, called “Magic,” Chevrolet engineers are seen putting the Camaro ZL1 through its paces on a road course. The development work is said to help perfect the car’s handling and allow fine-tuning of the magnetorheological adaptive suspension dampers that will be standard. In the second video, “Reaction,” the ZL1 arrives at a drag strip. Chevrolet engineers explain that the ZL1 has a special drag strip mode with launch control, helping drivers get the best acceleration every time.

The body style is identical to the current one, so why disguise it? What's the point of a 580 hp sports car with automatic transmission? It's like putting training wheels on before the Tour de France.
