Mustang or Camaro –which one is king of the pony car hill? It’s a question that’s been asked for more than 40 years now. We attempted to answer it in our three-part 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 versus 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 comparison test. Now, our colleagues at Motor Trend try to resolve the age-old rivalry in the latest episode of Head 2 Head, taking the two pony cars to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to find out which is really best.

In case you've been living under a rock for the past year, here's what you need to know: the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is the top-dog of the Camaro lineup. It packs 580 supercharged horsepower (and 551 lb-ft of torque) under its hood, thanks to its 6.2-liter LSA V-8. The Camaro ZL1 also has magnetorheological shock absorbers, borrowed from the Cadillac CTS-V, to help it comfortably put its power down no matter what surface the wheels encounter.

In the other corner is the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500. The Shelby GT500 is the most powerful Mustang yet, thanks to its new 5.8-liter supercharged V-8, which produces a jaw-dropping 662 hp and 631 lb-ft of torque. Though the GT500 has been to finishing school in order to make it a competent all-round performer, it still has a solid rear axle and less sophisticated electronically-adjustable suspension to contend with.

Which pony car will take the crown? Check out the latest episode of Head 2 Head below, and see for yourself.
