Feature Flick: Behind The Scenes of the 2014 Chevrolet Impala's Design

General Motors has been stepping up its game with car design and the 2014 Chevrolet Impala is one of the latest examples of its efforts. In the latest episode of Wide Open Throttle, host Jessi Lang heads Detroit to get a closer look at the Impala’s sheetmetal and interior digs.

First, Lang chats with John Cafaro, GM’s North American lead exterior designer on passenger cars. He points out a few notable features on the Impala’s exterior including the power dome that dominates the hood, 20-inch wheels, and chrome accents for the exhaust tips and the large bowtie emblem on the grille. He also talks about the Impala’s six-window treatment, which hints at the sedan’s large interior volume.

Next up is the director of interior design Crystal Windham, who discusses the work that went into the instrument panel. Her team ensured the dashboard was sleek, stretched out, and covered with soft-touch material. The overall goal was to give the Impala’s interior a more premium, yet sporty look. Watch the video for the full interview with Cafaro and Windham.

Chevy’s competition has also stepped up their game with their full-size sedan offerings. The 2012 Hyundai Azera and the upcoming 2013 Toyota Avalon are just a few redesigned cars with which the Impala will compete. Do you think the Impala has them beat on design? Sound off below.

From what little I can see here, this looks like a winner for Chevrolet. It looks a little like a Buick got rapped by a Jaguar, or perhaps it was a three way involving a VW Passatt CC too. But given how ugly Chevys have been of late this is an improvement. Congrats to Chevy.
Mr Windows
At first glance, it seems very Lincoln-esque. I would lose the Impala badging on the front doors, as that is what adds to the Lincoln feeling. I would also lose the wood grain in the center console, and anywhere else I couldn't see it. It's time to bury that meme. Otherwise, a very nice looking car for a Chevy. I wish Ford would slot something above the Taurus, as the Impala has it beat.
