Feature Flick: Audi's R8 GT Spyder Takes Flight

The Audi R8 turned heads as a base model, but gained even more popularity when given a V-10. Then the Audi R8 GT evolved, gaining carbon fiber bits and shedding some 220 pounds compared to the R8 V-10. Fast-acting fans placed their orders for the supercar’s limited production run of only 333 units.

In case you wondering why the R8 GT sold out so quickly, this video of its carbon-fiber convertible counterpart may give a little more perspective as to why they were snatched up so quickly. The soft drop-top, deemed the R8 GT Spyder, derives from the GT coupe, with the same 5.2-liter V-10 engine upgraded to 560 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque, up from 525 hp and 391 lb-ft in the standard R8 5.2 V-10.

We recently showed you photos of the convertible phenomenon, but now you see it in motion with this official Audi R8 GT Spyder official promo. The open-top beauty it shows off its lighter frame, while offering a closer look at all its curves and parts. Its 0-62mph time of 3.8 looks effortless as the ultra- lightweight machine floats around the track.

Get to know the GT Spyder a little better, inside and outside, with up-close views of its red GT badges, carbon-fiber rear wing, wheels, unique bucket seats and white-faced gauges. Like the R8 GT coupe, 333 units of the topless Spyder will be available. Each unit will wear its number on the shift knob, but the number the beauty wears in this video is a little unclear. What number does it look like to you?

Pricing and availability in the U.S. haven’t been announced, but the base price in Germany of €207,800 may be able to give you more of an idea.
