Feature Flick: 2014 Jaguar F-Type V-8 S Tested

Chances are you’ve probably heard plenty about the 2014 Jaguar F-Type, the brand’s first true sports car in recent memory. In this week’s episode of Ignition, host Carlos Lago takes this Jaguar out on the track and the street to experience the sights and sounds of the shapely British sports car with an exhaust note to remember.

The Jaguar F-Type tested here is the range-topping V-8 S model, with a 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 producing 495 horsepower through an eight-speed automatic. On the track, the F-Type puts down some impressive numbers, with 0-60 mph coming in just 3.4 seconds, a figure rivaling supercars like the 2014 SRT Viper. In fact, the acceleration is so impressive that Lago takes the Jaguar F-Type to the dyno and finds that Jaguar might be slightly underestimating the supercharged V-8’s power output.

It’s not all straight-line performance though, and you’d think that the tail-happy Jag would struggle on the dynamic track evaluations thanks to its predisposition to drift through every corner. Lago finds the chassis more balanced than expected, though, and the Jaguar F-Type delivers on the figure-eight handling test with a time that matches rivals like the Audi R8 V-8.

On canyon roads, the Jaguar F-Type starts to show its hefty curb weight, as Lago says it doesn’t feel like a true sports car. However, the thrust of the V-8 and its accompanying sound are so intoxicating that the F-Type still manages to have a distinct and special character in the hills.
