The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro will gain a new high-performance model soon with the re-introduction of the Z/28. Joining the 426hp SS model and the 556hp supercharged ZL-1, the upcoming 500hp, naturally aspirated 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 will be the most hardcore of the bunch, thanks to a crash diet, a specially tuned track suspension, and a host of aerodynamic improvements.
In this episode of Wide Open Throttle, Camaro chief engineer Al Oppenheiser joins some folks from Motor Trend and Hot Rod to talk about what the revival of this model name means for the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28. Oppenheiser starts off explaining why it was important for the Z/28 to be differentiated from other Camaros, as the Z/28 nameplate carries a lot of weight for the Camaro legacy. Apparently, the ZL-1 was going to be called the Z/28 initially, but Oppenheiser, who calls himself a Camaro purist, thought that the car did not quite fit right with the Z/28 name’s storied history.
The first Camaro Z/28 was in 1967 with the first-generation car, and was intended to be a race-ready Camaro with its lightweight construction, powerful engine, and upgraded suspension. After a brief hiatus, the Z/28 came back in 1977 on the second-generation Camaro and continued throughout the third- and fourth-generation Camaro lifespan.
Oppenheiser says the stripped-down mission was crucial for the newest Z/28, and also mentioned the goal of beating anything that Ford can put on the street. According to him, both these objectives have been met with the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, which goes up most directly with the Ford Mustang Boss 302, a similarly track-focused machine.
