Feature Flick: 2014 BMW M5 Competition Package

The 2014 BMW M5 is already a ferocious sport sedan, and the Competition Package that’s new for this year is aimed at bringing the M5 to an even higher level of performance. This week on Ignition, host Carlos Lago tests this uprated 2014 BMW M5 to see if the Competition Package is worth the $7300 cost.

The 2014 BMW M5 is powered by a 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V-8 engine that produces 560 horsepower and 502 lb-ft of torque in its standard configuration. The Competition Package adds 15 horsepower for a total of 575, and the torque peak is revised to last a little bit longer than in the standard car. Other upgrades include stiffer springs, dampers, and roll bars; a 0.4 inch lower ride height; and a recalibrated stability control system.

As Lago points out, the Competition Package is greater than the sum of its parts. All of the small upgrades add up to a car that is sharper, better balanced, and more fun than the standard M5 without compromising on-road comfort. On the track, the 2014 M5 with the Competition Package isn’t much faster in a straight line, but does post a significant improvement in the Figure Eight test, where it was 0.6 seconds faster than Motor Trend’s previous test of an M5 without the Competition Package.

Lago ultimately decides that this is the M5 BMW should have built from the get-go thanks mostly to its improved handling balance that even better masks the big sedan’s approximately 4300 lb curb weight. Check out the video below to see the 2014 BMW M5 Competition Package in action on the track.

Can't wait to see these cutting in and out of slower traffic on I-95 just north of Miami.  Who could possibly use all that power?  It's about ego not sporting.  "my bankroll is bigger than your's!
