When it comes to hatchbacks, we like it hot. While we've driven more mild versions of the Ford Focus compared to the hot hatches Europe has received, it's time for the new 2013 Focus ST to spice things up. On this week's episode of Ignition, host Carlos Lago tries not to get burned too badly by the hot hatch.
The ST badge on the back of the Focus means the car is infused with “sport technologies,” which begins with a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine good for a total output of 252 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. That amount of torque in a front-drive car can make launching a bit tricky, but Lago figures out the best way to do it. The ST hustled from 0-60 mph in 5.9 seconds and reached the quarter mile in 14.6 seconds going 95.9 mph. But the Focus ST's true colors showed around the figure eight. Lago said it was a riot to drive around the course, praising its well-balanced steering and control through the front end.
Would it be as fun to drive through the canyons, though? Lago likes how the Focus ST sounds – and we’re not surprised given the car’s active sound symposer technology – but can’t ignore the car’s torque steer. Is it enough to wipe the smile off his face though? Watch the video below to find out.
