Chevrolet has upped the Camaro SS' performance with the optional 1LE package to make the most of the 426-hp 6.2-liter V-8. While most enhancements are focused on handling and stopping for track duty, a shorter axle ratio quickens the engine’s response. In this Feature Flick, Motor Trend’s Carlos Lago takes the Camaro SS 1LE to the drag strip to see how well the car performs.
At the drag strip, the 1LE package is about half a second quicker to 60 mph (4.2 seconds) and through the quarter-mile (12.7 at 111.8 mph). The Brembo brakes help stop the Camaro 1LE from 60 mph in just 101 feet. Despite the 1LE’s 3860-pound curb weight, Chevrolet dialed out some of the SS’ understeer for more control with the throttle, though it will still push at the limit. The sticky Goodyear tires included in the 1LE package helped the Camaro pull 1.03 lateral g around the skidpad – the same as the Camaro ZL1. Around the figure-eight, the 1LE put down a time just off that of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG with a 24.2 second run at 0.83 g average.
While Lago is impressed with the handling improvements of the 1LE package, what does professional race car driver Randy Pobst think about it? Lago’s crew took the Camaro SS 1LE to the Willow Springs International Raceway for some track time with Pobst. Watch the video below.
