The latest episode of Head to Head focuses on a prize-fight between two big luxury bruisers. Host Jonny Lieberman takes these two long-wheelbase, flagship sedans out to see which one provides the better combination of luxury and excitement.
As the cars power around twisting roads in Santa Barbara, California, two distinct personalities emerge. Both sedans cost over $100,000, but they have different definitions of luxury. While the BMW seems to do everything well from comfort to technology, Lieberman describes the Jaguar as having the “x-factor” of a truly special driving experience. The sound of the Jaguar’s 470-hp, supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 certainly provides a thrilling soundtrack, and the XJL takes the lead at the test track as well with quicker 0-60-mph and quarter-mile times than the 750iL.
Interiors are always an important indicator of luxury, and both cars offer up a unique take on comfort. The BMW is commended for its much-improved iDrive multimedia controller in comparison to the Jaguar’s unimpressive touchscreen interface. However, the rear seat test is more of a toss-up: the BMW has a more modern environment versus the Jaguar’s liberal use of wood and leather in its cabin.
Is that special feeling behind the wheel enough to give the Jaguar the victory or will the BMW’s well-rounded nature prevail? Watch the video to find out which car comes out on top in the end.
