2012 Porsche 911 Carrera Winter Testing 2
Forget the test track. Porsche engineers tested the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera in some the world’s most treacherous conditions to make sure it would be ready for whatever comes its way. That's not exactly uncommon for an automaker, but it still does make for an entertaining video.
In the video below, a team of engineers test a few 911s out in some of the harshest weather conditions in South Africa and in the Arctic circle, making sure the cars live up to the Porsche standard. Through sandstorms and subzero temperatures, their goal was to fix problems the 911 may encounter in the toughest conditions before a consumer does.
For example, drivers won’t have to worry about getting stranded in the snow, because engineers already did. In minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit, the transmission oil in the all-new seven-speed transmission froze after hours of testing, making shifting nearly impossible.
