Dr. Trent Pierce's Lexus RX 400h Hybrid exploded when he went out to the SUV at his West Memphis home this morning. While initial reports blamed the hybrid's powertrain, police now say the blast was caused by an explosive placed in the vehicle.

Police initially did not suspect any foul play. Instead, the incident was believed to have been caused by a malfunction with Pierce's Lexus hybrid. It wasn't until later in the day that Police determined the explosion was the result of a device planted in the vehicle.

Pierce, who is the chairman of the Arkansas Medical Board, was critically injured. Police told reporters that he was flown to a Memphis, Tennessee hospital in extremely critical condition. The apparent blast occurred this morning around 8 a.m. when Pierce went to get into the SUV.

Board attorney William Trice said he knew of no heated disputes the chairman was a party to and said that even in board decisions, the chairman often does not vote. "This is just off the wall," Trice said. "It's just such bizarre circumstances."
