Expanding Horizons? Saab in Talks With Other Automakers About 92 Platform

#Saab

Earlier this year, Saab and BMW signed an agreement regarding small four-cylinder engines for future Saab models and the two automakers have also been in talks about a platform for a small Saab 92. Saab confirmed today it is in talks with BMW, but other carmakers as well.

"Clearly we have a preference, but whether it's BMW, I can't tell you," Victor Muller, CEO of Saab-Spyker, told Automotive News Europe. "BMW would make a wonderful partner."

The two European automakers became partners last month with the engine supply deal for the next-generation Saab 9-3. In addition to sharing BMW's engines for the next car, Saab is also in talks with automakers about licensing its own technology to several unnamed Asian automakers. The interested parties are looking to possibly license the 9-3's platform.

"We're in constant dialogue with a number of players to share the [9-3] technology," Muller said. "There are parties that are interested in talking about possible licensing of the technology.

"Every boardroom of every carmaker now has one major concern: How can I drive my breakeven point down? The quickest fix is to sell and share your technology because it's already been paid for."

For a new auto conglomerate that includes a loss-making brand and a high-end brand that has never turned a profit, lowering the breakeven point could certainly be a good thing.
