Name That FT-86: Toyota's New Sports Car May Use Celica Name in Europe, Japan

We know the U.S. version of Toyota’s FT-86 will most likely be sold as a Scion, but in Europe and Japan, the car may be known by a different -- and arguably much more familiar -- name: Celica.

Although that seems to neglect the FT-86's inspiration -- the AE86 Corolla -- British publication Autocar claims the Celica moniker is indeed in consideration. As a nod to the AE86, the number 86 may also be rolled into the car's finished title. In North America, the Scion brand will adhere to alphanumeric labels, likely giving the car the same FR-S (short for front engine, rear-wheel-drive, sport coupe) moniker used on a recent show car.

The styling of the production model likely won’t be as aggressive as the three concept cars were. Even though the FT-86 will be using Subaru’s lightweight and compact boxer flat-four, expect its stature to rise somewhat, as Toyota designers won't likely be able to retain the concept cars’ super-low nose and simultaneously pass pedestrian impact regulations.

Toyota maintains that the camouflaged FT-86 recently seen testing at the Nürburgring is not a high-performance version, but rather there will be optional aerodynamic pieces available for the car. The production version of the FT-86 is expected to make its appearance at the Tokyo Motor Show at the end of this year, before it finally -- finally! -- goes on sale in 2012.

We found this on fellow British Buff Book Car's YouTube channel. It's video of the FT-86 returning home from testing at the Nurburgring. Did you notice the Supra in the driveway right before the FT-86 pulls into the garage?

Although this could be a great small car, I'm concerned about the branding and marketing of it in the US Really, this should go to Scion, a brand with annual decreasing sales since 2006? A brand known for cheap transportation? It sort of reminds me of how Honda killed off the Integra, Vigor and Legend and replaced them meaningless letters, and have been wallowing in the brand doldrums ever since. Bring it back as a Celica or AE86 in the US! "FT-S" has no recognition. Since Ford was able to successfully bring back the Taurus name after a decade of rental car queen garbage, then Toyota Motor Sales should have an easy time of it by resurrecting some form of Celica or AE86.
