A new episode of The Downshift appears on Motor Trend’s new YouTube channel every Tuesday. This program recognizes the different subcultures of the vast automotive landscape. It will be showcasing various automotive hobbies from off-road trucks to hot rods and from lowriders to muscle cars.
This week in our first episode of The Downshift (and the second episode on our new channel) we bring you the history of lowriders from the point of view of custom car legend and editor- in-chief of Lowrider magazine, Joe Ray. He talks about how lowriders have changed more in the last 20 years than it has in its nearly 70 year history.
Ray shares his insights about the pros and cons of hydraulics on lowriders and the amount of time, money and most importantly passion the average lowrider enthusiast has for his/her car.
Lowrider magazine technical editor Saul Vargas talks about how the culture of lowriding is no longer just a “Hispanic thing” and how it has grown and has transcended the globe becoming extremely popular in places as far as Japan and Australia.
