Drive This Way: Hennessey Sells First 2012 Venom GT Spyder to Steven Tyler

He may have "pulled into town in a police car," but Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler will be driving out of it in his new 2012 Hennessey Venom GT Spyder, the first of 1244-horsepower convertibles ever sold.

Hennessey Performance Engineering has made six units of the Venom GT, a Lotus Elise-based supercar that boasts a twin-turbo 7.0-liter V-8 engine. While the original Elise made roughly 190 horsepower, the Venom GT makes about 1200.

HPE head John Hennessey said that he was approached last year by Tyler, who wanted to order one, but with a catch: he wanted his Venom GT to be a roadster. HPE engineers fashioned a removable top and made some changes to the rollcage, but found that it decreased the car's power-to-weight ratio. To make sure that the Spyder is just as quick as the coupe, Hennessey upped the engine's power a tad: the GT Spyder now makes 1244 horsepower and weighs 2743 pounds, just 58 pounds more than the regular GT. Fun fact: Tyler's Venom GT Spyder will hit 60 miles per hour in 2.5 seconds, 0.4 seconds quicker than the Disney World roller coaster that bears his band's name.

Hennessey said that his company will take the lessons it learned making Tyler's car and extend them to future examples: future GT models will be available in coupe, hardtop, or softtop setups. It's unclear exactly how many GT Spyders will be made, but HPE says it only plans to make 29 cars total.

Tyler's GT Spyder cost an estimated $1.1 million, or one dollar for every 60 Aerosmith albums sold in the United States since 1971. And if you think he'll give you a ride in it…dream on.
