Digital Juggernaut: Gran Turismo 5 Sells 5.5 Million Copies in Two Weeks

After six years of development and countless delays, Gran Turismo 5 officially went on sale on November 24. In a little under two weeks’ time, the latest installment in the Gran Turismo franchise has racked up nearly 5.5 million sales worldwide.

According to Sony Computer Entertainment of America, that figure was compiled on December 6, 2010, a mere twelve days after the long-anticipated title finally popped up on store shelves around the globe. Sony says the sales figure was driven largely by European customers, who snatched up a whopping 3.6 million copies in two weeks’ time. North American gamers bought nearly 1.3 million discs, while sales in Sony’s native Japan totaled in at 550,000.

Impressive, especially when you look at the sales performance of other games in the GT franchise. Gran Turismo 5: Prologue only managed to sell 5.03 million copies since its launch in April 2008. GT5 has also managed to outsell Gran Turismo 4: Prologue and Gran Turismo PSP, and has already racked up nearly half the global sales volume the original Gran Turismo accomplished in 12 years time.

In total, nearly 61 million GT games have been sold around the world in just under 13 years, making it one of the (if not the) best-selling racing series ever created. If GT5’s momentum carries through the holiday season, we wouldn’t be surprised if the latest iteration racks up additional sales records in the years to come.
