Detroit 2012: 2013 Scion FR-S Prepares for Formula Drift

Few new cars have been met with as much anticipation as the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ twins. Affordable rear-drive cars have all but vanished from the market and we’re hoping these platformmates will inspire a new generation of car enthusiasts.

Scion was conceived as a brand for younger buyers and the FR-S looks to be the first Scion designed for young people who enjoy driving. Earlier Scion products were more about customization and personalization with different wheels, graphics packages, and a bunch of different choices for minor items like interior trim. An odd performance exhaust or air intake could be found in the Scion parts catalog, but there wasn’t much else to improve the performance of your xA, xB, xD, or tC. Ok, the tC parts catalog offered a supercharger for a few years, but that option went away in 2007. The FR-S should change all that.

One thing Scion has been doing to interest younger enthusiasts is competing in the Formula Drift series. Scion’s newest drift car will be a 600 hp version of the new FR-S coupe that’s been tuned by GReddy, a tuner that’s been racing Toyotas for two decades. Details on the impressive power gains aren’t being announced right now, but it’s safe to assume the drift FR-S isn’t normally aspirated anymore.

Wondering what the fascination with “86” is about? That would be a reference to Toyota’s Corolla GT-S, known to enthusiasts the world over as AE86. There’s a commemorative badge on the fender of every FR-S with a stylized 86 logo and a pair of horizontally opposed pistons. In another cute coincidence, the bore and stroke of the boxer four set down low in the FR-S engine bay is 86 x 86 mm.
