Detroit 2012: 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe Gets a Bit More Serious

When Hyundai’s Genesis Coupe was first released, it was dubbed a Mustang-fighter. Since then, the Mustang has received a big power bump, so Hyundai has followed suit: its 2013 Genesis Coupe, released today at the Detroit Auto Show, has quite a bit more of it.

The power comes from one of two engines. The base engine is Hyundai’s 2.0-liter Theta turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which has been bumped from 210 horsepower in the previous generation to a stout 260 horses when running on regular gas. Drivers who prefer to put premium in their tanks will get an extra 15 horses.

If that’s not enough, the Genesis has classically offered a 3.8-liter V-6 engine. While the engine previously made 283 horsepower, the new Genesis Coupe’s V-6 gets direct injection, which is enough to bump the output to 350 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.

Elsewhere, the Genesis Coupe gets a visual makeover along the line of Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture design language. The car also gets an improved interior. Notable addition: a panel of three dials on the center stack, which includes a torque-meter.

The Genesis Coupe may still lose the numbers game to the Ford Mustang--by anywhere between 30 and 72 horses--but Hyundai executives say that the Genesis isn’t exactly made to remain stock forever. Hyundai says that it kept the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine without direct injection to give tuners more room to work. It also pointed out that the engine bay is the same size as the Genesis sedan, which would make it ripe for a 5.0-liter V-8 model. Is it possible? Yes. Likely? No.

What is that big black doughnut sticking out of the front end? The black and white spy photos look better. Too much bling on this one. What is with the eyebrows on the hood? Yikes! I'll take the Mustang!
