Cute and Topless: The 2013 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible

Volkswagen buyers who wanted both a cheeky car and wind in their hair were out of luck the past two years. However, VW now has a follow up to the 2001-2010 New Beetle Convertible: the all-new 2013 Beetle Convertible.

Based off of the refreshed Beetle hatchback that launched in 2012, the new Convertible looks -- well, it looks like a Beetle. The drop-top bug continues to use a softtop (VW has the Eos for fans of retractable hardtops) that piles up behind the rear seats when the top is lowered. Volkswagen promises the top lies completely flat and won't obstruct rearward visibility, and that the top can be lowered in just 10 seconds. VW says the top retains the current Beetle's squashed-yet-rounded roofline when erected, but VW has yet to release any images of the 2013 Beetle Convertible with its top up.

To compensate for the lack of a roof, Volkswagen equips the Beetle Convertible with a host of new safety features -- notably the automatic rollover support system, which automatically deploys two roll-over bars from behind the rear seat. The Beetle Convertible also comes equipped with driver and front passenger head-thorax airbags.

Powertrain offerings mirror those available on the Beetle hatchback. There are a trio of engines availabl, including a 170-hp 2.5-liter I-5, a 200-hp 2.0-liter turbo-four, and a 140-hp 2.0-liter turbo-diesel I-4 that's rated at 41 mpg on the highway with a manual transmission. Either of the turbocharged mills are available with the choice of either a six-speed manual or a six-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox, but the 2.5-liter I-5 comes only with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Volkswagen has yet to announce pricing – those numbers will come closer to the Beetle Convertible's launch this winter – but expect it to be above the Beetle hatchback's $20,590 starting point. We expect that the 2013 Beetle Convertible will make its official debut where the sun always shines: November's annual Los Angeles auto show.
