Coup(e) de Grace: Is a Porsche 918 Coupe Destined for Detroit Auto Show?

Porsche is hard at work readying its 918 Spyder for production, but is a fixed-roof variant also in the cards? Perhaps so -- in fact, a number of sources now report a 918 Coupe concept is destined for a world debut at the 2011 Detroit auto show.

Apart from noting it will be "giving a new model its world debut," Porsche hasn't said much about what it plans on showing in the Motor City. Automotive News and German publication AutoBild, however, suggest that car is a concept of a 918 coupe, possibly decked out as a full-fledged racecar.

That isn't surprising, given the 918 project -- once code-named XG10 -- evolved from Porsche's LMP program. As we reported at the Spyder's debut in March, the platform was designed from square one to support multiple variants, including a fixed-roof coupe, two- and four-wheel-drive drivelines, and an RS or RSR racing variant.

Another variable lies with the powertrain itself. Although the 918 Spyder concept showcased a high-performance plug-in hybrid system, we noted the platform was capable of supporting both hybrid drive systems or a conventional gasoline engine. Automotive News suggests the new concept will adopt the latter, using a V-8 capable of cranking out a stout 600 horsepower.

Without a doubt, rolling out a new iteration of its next-generation supercar could very well steal the spotlight at the Detroit show, a venue Porsche hasn't attended in nearly four years. We'll know more for certain bright and early Monday morning, as Porsche's press conference is scheduled to begin at 6:30 A.M. on January 11th.

You will never see a hybrid version of this car. Since the climate scandal unravels to the fullest, they will probably introduce a thoroughbred and gasoline-powered car to the exhibition. Enough said.............
