Chrysler to Eliminate Either Jeep Liberty or Dodge Nitro

2009 Dodge Nitro R/t

Chrysler plans on eliminating either the Dodge Nitro or Jeep Liberty by 2012.

The two small SUVs are built on the same platform and have both suffered sales declines recently. Steven Landry, Chrysler’s vice president in charge of North American sales, said the company would be eliminating one of the vehicles as part of Project Genesis, Chrysler’s plan to reduce brand overlap.

Landry did not elaborate on which would be cut, but the odds are heavily in favor of the Nitro, which has never really gotten a foothold in the marketplace. It moved less than half the volume of the Liberty in August and is off by a staggering 71 percent from its sales during the same period last year.

Put the Jeep grill on the Nitro. Did Dodge dealers really think they knew how to sell this? Magnum would be alive today if Chrysler had it as a 300 model!
Keep the Liberty, but please bring us back a diesel version (4 cylinder turbodiesel, and maybe a top range V6 diesel).
