For the 20th month in a row, Chrysler Group reported monthly sales that were higher than a year prior. The company’s monthly vehicle sales volume in November was up 45 percent compared to November 2010, to 107,172 vehicles sold last month. While those sales jumps are impressive, it’s important to remember that Chrysler launched redesigned versions of nearly every model at the end of 2010, which may have slowed sales in November of last year.
Chrysler -- 18,577 sales, up 92 percent
Leading the charge within the Chrysler brand was the 200 sedan and convertible, with sales of 8065 units outstripping any other Chrysler vehicle last month. The 300 sedan recorded 4066 sales; both it and the 200 saw huge sales gains versus November 2010 as the cars were redesigned late last year. Chrysler also says a barrage of advertising for the two cars over Thanksgiving helped bolster November sales numbers. In addition, Chrysler’s Town & Country minivan managed 6446 sales last month, down just one percent year-over-year.
Dodge -- 30,317 sales, up 43 percent
The Grand Caravan minivan posted the highest volume within the Dodge brand, with 6053 monthly sales representing a three-percent year-over-year increase. The Avenger and Charger sedans, however, posted Dodge’s biggest sales jumps versus November 2010. The former sold 5,643 units, up 102 percent year-over-year, while the Charger’s 5,099 sales represent a jump of 160 percent compared to a year prior. Both cars were dramatically redesigned at the end of 2010 for the 2012 model year.
Sales gains were also posted by the Challenger muscle car, with 2996 sales accounting for a year-over-year gain of 20 percent, and the Journey crossover, with sales up 38 percent to 3711 last month. At the other end of the spectrum, sales of the Caliber hatchback slid 62 percent to 1202 cars, and the Nitro SUV saw volume fall 24 percent to 1661 units.
Ram -- 20,414 sales, up seven percent
The Pentastar’s truck division enjoyed a seven-percent sales gain, buoyed by sales of Ram pickup trucks and the new minivan-based Cargo Van. Ram pickups saw sales lift eight percent to 19,739 last month, while the Cargo Van tallied 226 monthly sales. The brand also managed to sell 449 copies of the now-defunct Dakota pickup, which represented a year-over-year sales decline of 46 percent.
Jeep – 36,246 sales, up 50 percent
Jeep sales gains are also buoyed by the fact that the brand’s entire lineup was refreshed in late 2010. The new products have been immensely popular with Jeep buyers; the Grand Cherokee was the brand’s top-seller last month, recording 13,545 sales for a year-over-year gain of 23 percent. The redesigned Wrangler sold 9225 units, up 41 percent versus a year prior, and the Liberty saw sales leap 53 percent to 5201 units. Patriot sales also increased 46 percent, to 4013.
While the Jeep Compass experienced an incredible year-over-year sales gain of 887 percent, that really just reflects the low number of Compasses sold last November. Just 432 units were sold in November 2010 as Chrysler readied a refreshed model for 2011, making last month’s sales of 4262 units a huge jump by percentage.
Fiat -- 1618 sales
While Fiat sold 1618 examples of the 500 hatchback, that didn’t do much to help the brand overall. Year-to-date sales of the Italian-sourced subcompact now tally 17,444 units. Fiat North America brand chief Laura Soave was recently booted from her position with the brand, likely due in part to the struggling sales. One solid indicator of the 500’s lackluster customer appeal: the company reportedly has a six-month supply of the hatchback at dealerships.
