Chrysler will reveal an extended-range electric vehicle to dealers nationwide next week, The Wall Street Journal reports.

A memo from company vice president Steven Landry said dealers would get a preview of some “cutting-edge product" during a telecast on September 23. It is the latest hint from Chrysler that it is further along in electric car development than most assume. Earlier this month, the company showed three electric car concepts to a select few dealers, and company co-president Jim Press said a plug-in hybrid with a range of 300 miles was in the company’s future. People familiar with the car told The Journal it will have an all-electric range of 40 miles, matching that of the 2011 Chevrolet Volt.

But the automaker faces several hurdles before it can even consider producing the car. It has no agreements with potential suppliers for batteries, and most of the car’s development has come from partnerships with other companies, rather than its own engineers. . Dealers will also see the next Jeep Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300.
