Chrysler will invest $52 million and create 298 new jobs at factories in Michigan to increase production of the Tigershark four-cylinder engines used in the 2013 Dodge Dart and 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The company says that strong demand for those new vehicles forced it to increase production.
The investment consists of Chrysler spending $11.5 million to add an assembly line for the four-cylinder Tigershark engine at its Trenton North plant in southeast Michigan. The company will spend another $40.5 million to convert a production line at the nearby Dundee Engine Plant to build crankshafts, engine blocks, and engine heads for the Tigershark engines. Chrysler expects production of Tigershark engines to begin at Trenton by the third quarter of this year.
"We are fortunate that we had an existing facility that could accommodate the additional capacity needs for Tigershark and one that has the know-how to support that additional production," Chrysler head of powertrain manufacturing Brian Harlow said in a statement.
The Trenton North plant currently builds the Pentastar V-6 engine range. The Dundee plant assembles the 2.0-liter Tigershark engine, older 2.0- and 2.4-liter four-cylinders, as well as the 1.4-liter inline-four engine used in the Fiat 500, and 1.4-liter turbo-four engine from the Fiat 500 Abarth.
The 2013 Dodge Dart is available with 160-hp, 2.0-liter and 184-hp, 2.4-liter Tigershark inline-four engines, while the 2014 Jeep Cherokee is offered with the 184-hp, 2.4-liter inline-four Tigershark.
