Chrysler Group Sales Continue Steady Increase, Jeep Brand Jumps 55 Percent

For the 14th consecutive month, sales of Chrysler Group products rose year-over-year, with an impressive 115,363 vehicles sold in May. That figure is up 10 percent year-over-year, and represents Chrysler’s strongest May sales since 2008.

While the Ram Truck, Jeep, and Fiat brands all saw sales increases compared to May 2010, sales of Dodge vehicles fell five percent year-over-year, and Chrysler products dropped 21 percent. The overall sales increase was spearheaded by new vehicles like the Chrysler 200, Dodge Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Fiat 500. The 2012 Fiat 500 continues to attract buyers, selling 1759 copies in May and 3141 so far in all of 2011.

Chrysler – 16,364 units, down 21 percent

The new 200 led Chrysler sales last month, selling 7098 units and bringing total sales of the nameplate to 25,252 so far in 2011. Unfortunately, sales of the 300 fell 28 percent year-over-year, to 2539 units, even though Chrysler launched a new model that is significantly redesigned. Meanwhile sales of the Town & Country minivan dropped 51 percent to 6629 units in May.

Jeep – 35,573 units, up 55 percent

Jeep’s sales gains were buoyed by the new Grand Cherokee, which recorded a year-over-year increase of 192 percent, amounting to 9484 sales in May. The volume leader continued to be the Wrangler, up four percent to 10,008 sales. Every other Jeep nameplate also saw sales gains compared to May 2010: Compass was up 92 percent to 4002, Patriot climbed 80 percent to 5470 sales, and the Liberty saw a 47-percent bump to 6048 monthly sales. Every single Jeep model was refreshed or redesigned for the 2011 model, which may explain the impressive sales gains.

Dodge – 40,200 units, down 5 percent

Every Dodge product saw a sales decrease for May year-over-year, except for the revamped Nitro and Durango. The former saw sales inch up 7 percent to 1900 units, while the new Durango recorded 4358 sales.The biggest loser was the Caliber, dropping 47 percent year-over-year to just 4002 units. Charger volumes fell 19 percent to 7830, while the Challenger saw its sales decline 11 percent to 3418 units. The Caravan minivan remained Dodge’s hottest seller, inching up less than one percent to 9427 sales.

Ram Truck – 21,467 units, up 13 percent

With just two new products in its portfolio, Ram scored an impressive 13-percent year-over-year sales gain. May 2011 was the Ram Truck division’s 13th consecutive month of sales increases. Although Dakota sales dropped 16 percent, to 1350 trucks, the larger Ram pickup more than compensated with a 16-percent sales gain, to 20,117 units.
