It’s a bird; it’s a plane; it’s….a Kia Optima. Lest you thought the Korean automaker was happy with five one-off cars patterned after DC’s Justice League super heroes, we now have a sixth – and it’s a rolling tribute to the Man of Steel himself: Superman.
Working with the staff at Super Street magazine, Kia took a stock 2013 Optima Hybrid, fitted it with muscular flared fenders, and doused it with Superman’s familiar colors. The majority of the car is painted blue, but a metallic red stripe, which wraps around the side windows and flares out over the rear fenders, emulates Kal-El’s cape, while the super hero’s famed logo is stamped on the hood. The beveled red grille allegedly resembles Superman’s belt, while red-tinted headlamps, according to Kia’s release, “glow with the same intensity of his heat vision.”
Yes, it sounds a bit silly, but there is a good cause behind all this. All of Kia’s Justice League cars are designed to raise awareness (and, potentially, funding) for DC Entertainment’s We Can Be Heroes campaign, which aims to aid those suffering from drought and famine in the Horn of Africa.
Kia’s string of customized hero cars isn’t quite complete, either. We hear Kia still needs to build a car for Wonder Woman (we hope it matches her invisible jet), and an eight car that allegedly incorporates elements from all seven comic book heroes. For those not keeping track (or aren’t that well versed in comics), expect that car to pay tribute to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg.
